Conference Makes Studying Abroad Easier for Students with Disabilities

No one knows where in the world Carmen Sandiego is, but with the help of the Office of Study Abroad, there's a good chance that a student with a disability will soon be in her midst.

Hosting "Disability and Study Abroad: A Workshop to Inspire and Inform Faculty and Advisors", is a step in the right direction.

The event will take place from 8am until 1pm on Friday, October 27, 2006.  This free workshop, held at the International Center in Spartan Rooms B and C, aims to raise awareness that students and faculty with all types of disabilities can and do have successful study abroad experiences.

Valerie Nilson, Learning Disability Specialist for RCPD, says the workshop will provide helpful information and resources for faculty and academic advisors who have questions about inclusion of students with disabilities in study abroad programs.

"Its aim is to help faculty feel more comfortable taking students with disabilities out of the country," she explained, "the workshop will inform them of the different resources that are available and hopefully inspire them to consider their needs when planning programs."

The event is sponsored by the President's Advisory Committee on Disability Issues and the Office of Affirmative Action, Compliance and Monitoring. It will feature Dr. Heidi Soneson, a program director from the Office of Study Abroad and Dr. Michael J. Leahy, the director of the Office of Rehabilitation and Disability Studies.

The workshop also includes lunch and staff and student panels, so participants are encouraged to R.S.V.P. by Friday, October 20, 2006.
