Audio Cassette Tape and CD Distribution Policy
Note: Cassettes are currently being phased out and availability is limited.
Background: As cassette tape or CD is used for some alternative format text distribution to students with disabilities, it is necessary to outline the procedure by which these books are distributed and collected by the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD). For academic materials that RCPD produces as a result of the unavailability of the material from any external source, the audio or electronic text shall be produced on RCPD selected cassettes or CD to ensure the quality of the recording or e-text. Thus, RCPD purchases cassettes and CD’s, which meet its standards of quality and durability. RCPD will produce text materials provided by a student when they are essential for participation in a credit-granting course in which the student is enrolled. The following guides denote the procedure for maintaining a collection of tapes and CD’s for distribution:
- Any cassette or CD distributed to a student is either returned to the office at the termination of a semester without charge or is kept by the student with the understanding that a charge of $1 per cassette or CD, or a minimum of $5.00, is assessed through the student's university account.
- Before a fee for unreturned cassettes or CD’s is assessed, RCPD provides written notice of the number of items to be returned and/or corresponding cash value due. This written notice is distributed through the student's MSU e-mail account.
- Once provided with written notice of unreturned items, the student has two weeks from the statement date to return the cassettes or CD’s. At the end of this two-week period, a fee equivalent to the value of all unreturned items shall be assessed through the student's university account.
- At the point when a charge for unreturned items reaches the student's account, it is expected that this fee will be paid as any other fee levied by the university. Failure to pay the fee results in the activation of the university policy regarding unpaid fees thus resulting in a hold being placed on university enrollment, release of transcripts, etc.
If questions or concerns regarding the reporting of unreturned tapes or CD’s occur or if the student believes that a hold was wrongly placed on the account, the student may contact their RCPD Specialist.
