RCPD has been a great resource during my years at State. The staff is great and the books on tape and other assistive technologies have been helpful.

Transportation

The Capital Area Transit Authority (CATA) offers transportation services for Michigan State University's campus, and the surrounding area. Your choice of the type of transportation service to use should be based on your specific needs.

CATA Fixed Route System
CATA and MSU have invested in the creation of fixed routes that serve the MSU campus as the most popular method of cross-campus and community travel. Ramped entrances, location announcement systems, and infrared talking signage, now compliment CATA's fixed routes. Customers are picked up and dropped off at designated bus stops along a fixed route with scheduled times.

SpecTran
If fixed routes do not meet your needs, RCPD Specialists are authorized to provide CATA Spectran certification, enabling persons with mobility related disabilities to access curb-to-curb services as an alternative to the traditional bus system. SpecTran services are restricted to customers meeting Americans with Disabilities Act paratransit eligibility guidelines. All CATA drivers receive training to facilitate their understanding of the transportation issues related to persons with disabilities.

Rides must be reserved at least one day in advance and can be scheduled up to 14 days before the trip. The telephone number from a campus phone is 432-8888.

Persons registered to use SpecTran may plan a semester-long schedule in advance for rides that are consistent or they may call in a ride request no later than 5 p.m. on the day before the ride is required. This advance notification allows SpecTran representatives to plan out a complex series of schedules in advance of the actual rides.

MSU students and employees needing special transportation may contact a Disability Specialist for individualized assistance.

Demand Response Curb-to-Curb Service
Night Owl service provides demand response curb-to-curb trips anywhere on the MSU campus. A bus can usually be at your curb within 20 minutes of your request. Dial 432-8888 from a campus or green light phone to place your request.

The Commuter Lot and Campus Only Pass are not accepted for Night Owl routes.
