Michigan State University's Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) supports disabled MSU students and employees in accessing accommodations and other supports.
What is a disability?
Disability is defined as a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, such as sitting, sleeping, or concentrating. Disabilities may be acquired at any time and are an aspect of life and diversity.
How do I receive services for my disability?
If you are a MSU student or employee and you have a disability, you can register with the RCPD and you may be eligible to receive accommodations. While the university provides reasonable accommodations, we cannot change essential academic requirements or job functions. Accommodation determinations are based on documentation and individualized needs assessment meetings.
What will I receive to verify my accommodations?
Students and employees who are approved for accommodations will receive a letter that includes verification of registration status with the RCPD and an outline of reasonable accommodations. This letter is called an Accommodation Letter for students or a SEAD for employees.
Confidentiality & Mandatory Reporting
The RCPD adheres to strict standards of confidentiality in the management of student information. Since RCPD is the only holder of disability documentation, all disability-related documentation should be directed to RCPD (not other campus departments).
The RCPD staff are designated as mandatory reporters and must promptly report incidents of sexual harassment, sexual violence, sexual misconduct, stalking, and relationship violence that are observed or learned about in their professional capacity and involve a member of the university community or occurred at a university-sponsored event or on university property.
