In September 2024, the first Disability in Higher Education Summit was held at the Kellogg Center on MSU’s campus. The event was a collaboration between, and sponsored by, the Office for Civil Rights, Title IX Education and Compliance’s Office of the ADA Coordinator, University Health and Wellbeing Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, MSU Libraries, and the Office of Employee Relations. This event garnered so much interest that it was filled to capacity within the first week of the save-the-date being sent out in mid-July and a virtual attendance component was added!
This day-long Summit began at 8:00am and covered many topics listed here:
- Creating accessible digital documents
- Hosting accessible events
- Disability identity in higher education
- Disability in the workplace and careers for college graduates
- Student and Employee Panels - Neurodiversity and non-apparent disabilities
- Faculty Panel - Doing it Right: Managing accommodations Resource Fair
Jay Dolmage was the featured Keynote Speaker. Jay is an advocate for disability rights and author of Disability Rhetoric; Academic Ableism: Disability in Higher Education; and, Disabled Upon Arrival: Eugenics, Immigration, and the Construction of Race and Disability. He is also the Founding Editor of the Canadian Journal of Disability Studies. His work brings together rhetoric, disability studies, and critical pedagogy. Jay is a fierce advocate for disability rights and is committed to bringing disability and accessibility awareness to the forefront. Learn more about Jay in this short video.
