The Spartan Family Sensory Room located in the Breslin Center officially opened this week. This space is a quiet place for individuals to take a break from overwhelming stimulation while at a sporting or other public event held in the Breslin Center.
Sensory rooms are a safe, calming space for individuals to escape stimulation that feels overwhelming. They are designed to help people with sensory issues through objects, music, special lighting, and have tremendous benefits for persons with sensory processing disorders.
The Spartan Family Sensory Room is equipped with soft lighting, fidgets, comfortable seating, bubble lamps, and other sensory items. The room is located near the Northwest side of the complex in room 158.
Former MSU basketball player, Anthony Ianni who is autistic, along with Fredi Bello, a Michigan based pizzeria owner and founder of the Fredi the PizzaMan Foundation, and who has a son with autism, were instrumental in the concept and creation of this very important space. Together they collaborated with others in the MSU community to bring the idea of a sensory space to life.
RCPD Team members, Virginia Rutan, Lindsay Hill, Hannah Huey-Jones, Jessica Lutz, Kristin Campbell, Tesia Freer, and Tanya Adams, were all present for the dedication ceremony held on Tuesday and shared their collective excitement for the sensory room.
