In partnership with MSU Recreational Sports and Fitness and Occupational Therapist Cindy Horgan, RCPD is sponsoring two new opportunities for fitness and movement classes for MSU students with disabilities.
The Structured Space is a class based on Voice Colors Yoga Program designed for folks with sensory needs, with additional visual prompts and supports for motor planning. This is a safe space for Neurodivergent Mind & Bodies.
The Adapted Space is a class based on MindBody Solutions, and is designed for folks with physical disabilities. It does not require physical movement but instead focuses on bodily awareness and sensations.
Check out Cindy Horgan’s website, yesandot.com for more information on the classes being offered, as well as her philosophy and mission.
The purpose of these classes is to create spaces for bodily awareness, mindfulness and connection on campus that are not only accessible, but are in fact designed with disabled folks in mind.
This spring, the Structured Space class will be offered at 1:00 pm and the Adapted Space class will be offered at 2:30 pm on April 14, April 21 and May 5. Both classes will take place in the dance studio at IM East.

What to expect: The theme for the first week of the Structured space movement class was “twisting”. Cindy displayed photos of real people modeling body positions and steps of each activity, while colored hand and foot cutouts serve to help with motor planning on the mat. The room was cool and naturally lit with a steady white noise coming from a fan. A visual timer made it easy to check our progress in the class. There were individual glitter jars to for visual focus during deep breathing practice. Cindy also provided cue cards to take with for use throughout the week.
