ROTC cadets from Michigan State University (MSU) and the University of Michigan (UM) came together on October 25, 2024, for the 11th annual Alex’s Great State Race. This 64-mile run, beginning at MSU’s Sparty Statue and ending at UM’s Diag, is held in memory of Alex Powell, a former MSU student whose life and legacy continue to inspire both institutions.
Alex Powell was a lifelong Spartan fan who dreamed of attending MSU. Shortly after being accepted, however, Alex was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. During his freshman year, as his condition worsened, Alex turned to MSU’s Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) for support. RCPD helped Alex manage his academic responsibilities, offering accommodation strategies and assisting him in communicating his needs to his professors.
Despite his illness, Alex’s connection to both MSU and UM grew during his treatment, as he received cancer care at the University of Michigan. This unique bond with both institutions inspired Alex’s parents, Juliana and Steve Powell, to establish Alex’s Great State Race in 2014, an event that unites the schools not in competition, but in support of students with disabilities.
On the day before the annual MSU vs. UM football game, ROTC cadets from both universities, along with adaptive athletes, will relay the official game ball from East Lansing to Ann Arbor. The race serves as a reminder of the critical work done by the RCPD at MSU and UM’s Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services in supporting students with disabilities. It also raises awareness and funds to ensure that students like Alex receive the resources they need to succeed.
This year, participants were also encouraged to take part virtually by running, walking, rolling, or hiking, as many miles as they wish on October 25, 2024. Miles logged in support of MSU or UM can be donated to show team spirit while helping a meaningful cause.
