Everyone knows you can’t eat ice cream by the scoop, you’ll get brain freeze (or task paralysis)! It is best to take bite sized amounts, and the same rings true when it comes to career exploration and preparation. Tanya Adams, a vocational rehabilitation counselor from Michigan Rehabilitation Services, gave students a bunch of bite-sized suggestions at a meet & greet event on Wednesday, August 28th, 2022. Tanya provided the scoop to students – encouraging them to come with their questions about careers, employment and accommodations, and of course – their sweet tooth!
Don’t know where to start with your career exploration? Tanya suggests starting with just two of these bite sized steps:
- Fill out a referral form for Tanya from Michigan Rehabilitation Services
- Download the Handshake app, create your profile, and browse career events and employers
- Look at job postings on Handshake, MSU’s website, or Indeed
- Download Linkedin, fill out your profile, add a photo, and start building connections related to your field
- Look up your career advisor in your academic college and schedule a meeting
- Identify three career events to attend each semester
- Set aside ___ minutes a week or month to dedicate to career planning/readiness/exploration
- Start a running list of questions you wonder about related to different jobs and career goals
- Start a running list of employers or organizations that you have interest in or want to learn more about
- Start a list of job postings that interest you and note what you like/dislike
- Attend a virtual workshop via Handshake or Career Services Network on resume and cover letters, using Linkedin, or even how to navigate career fairs
- Take advantage of walk-in career services
- Meet with your favorite professor and ask about recommendations for jobs and internships in the field
- Ask older students what helped them feel confident about majors and plans for after graduation
- Meet with Tanya at Bessey Hall to talk about MRS!
The Bosco Careers Collaborative was launched in 2014 through private gifts from Michael and Kathy Bosco matching state and federal funds in partnership with Michigan Rehabilitation Services, providing students access to a full-time on-campus vocational rehabilitation counselor.
