The MSU Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities welcomed Tyler Smeltekop to our team as the Assistant Director of Assistive Technology Innovation in September 2022, where he will work to expand access to accessible technology, course content, and equitable experiences across campus. Tyler graduated from MSU in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in Professional Writing. After graduation, Tyler secured a job working at MSU Libraries as the Course Materials Program Manager and received his master’s in library science. During his 12 years with MSU Libraries, he worked to improve access to affordable and accessible course content for all. Tyler’s experience of living as a Deaf person—using hearing aids, cochlear implants, lipreading, and American Sign Language—has given him insight and the passion to compassionately advocate for those with disabilities, ensuring that each individual’s needs are being met.
When asked what he is most passionate about he said, “There is no feeling for me quite like participating in a collaborative effort with motivated, dedicated people in pursuit of removing barriers and improving accessibility. I am driven by the affirmations that stem from this work; that the differences between us make us better as a whole, that compassion and vulnerability must be a part of helping others, and that none of us are alone if we share and work toward a common goal.”
