Honoring America's service-men and women is a longstanding tradition at Michigan State. Most recently the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities hosted more than a dozen returning veterans and service members at the second annual MSU Student Veterans and Service Members Welcome Reception.
Michigan State has a time honored practice of providing veterans and service members with access to a high quality education. Following their service, the RCPD along with several other organizations on campus are here to help ease the transition and provide assistance in their return to civilian life.
The Welcome Reception brought several opportunities to thank our veterans for their service. The RCPD partnered with multiple organizations and departments to bring knowledge and assistance to our veterans. The evening was a chance to reach out to those with disabilities who may need help as well as those who may benefit from campus resources. The Army and Air Force ROTC and the offices of Financial Aid, Study Abroad, Learning Resource Center, Olin Health Center and the MSU Counseling Center all attended with materials and staff to encourage veterans to seek out every opportunity available at Michigan State.
The Welcome Reception continued for a second year with the assistance from the Emerging Opportunities Endowment and U.S. Air Force and Army veteran Robert El Henicky. Through a new partnership between the RCPD and El Henicky, the RCPD hopes to establish a series of casual monthly talks with veterans on the transition to civilian life. Operation Spartan High Ground as it's been designated has been created to maximize service quality. El Henicky spoke with the veterans at the reception about the importance of an education and that success in life following a military career comes from a university education.
