Some rolled, many ran, and lots walked across the finish line, but all were seen racing to complete the 3.1 miles across Sparty’s backyard.
Michigan State’s longstanding honorary organization, Tower Guard, comprised of 70 students from the top 5% of their class hosted this annual event. The Shamrock 5k run serves as the organization’s main fundraiser empower activities at the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities. In addition to fundraising, Tower Guard members volunteer 120 hours at the RCPD throughout their sophomore year. Through the merit of these leaders, Michigan State Spartans can benefit from an inclusive education.
RCPD Specialist and Tower Guard Liaison, Angela Sebald, has played an instrumental role integrating Tower Guard members with the missions and responsibilities of the RCPD.
Sparty and participants are ready to run the Shamrock 5k
Sebald said, “Not only has this year's TG group been instrumental in making textbooks accessible for people with visual impairments, learning and physical disabilities, they've also been able to volunteer in more one-on-one situations with students registered with RCPD.
The addition of the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Club has allowed TG members the ability to get to know students with disabilities on a more personal level.
Their commitment to making a difference for our office by holding community events such as the Shamrock 5k is outstanding.
Personally, I enjoyed this year's race because I was able to bring my entire family to MSU. I love sharing my job/campus life with my children. My son, Drake, was even able to complete his first 5k!”
Tower Guard’s executive board members, Annette Kim and Meredith Herman directed the 5k committee towards a successful year raising a total of $6500.
Run Chair, Meredith Herman stated: “I was impressed with the turn out, especially with three other community races the same day.
It was an honor and privilege to help organize this 5K, and I enjoyed working with fellow Tower Guard members, the RCPD, and the community.”
Run Chair, Annette Kim emphasized that the race was possible thanks to the generous sponsors including: Kellogg Center, Espresso Royale, Bruegger’s Bagels, Bagger Dave’s, Foods For Living, Pizza House, Eat at State, Jonna’s 2 Go!, Sweet Lorraine’s Fabulous Mac N’ Cheez!, Velocipede Peddler, Underground Printing, MSU Hall Governments. Kim said, “It is amazing and wonderful to see all these sponsors from various places within the community wanting to support the race.
I am so grateful to have had this chance to know that many people are willing to participate in supporting and building a community for diverse people ”.
Sparty joined the fun run and led some stretches before the race started. All participants gathered in the land of green and white in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, to celebrate MSU and the RCPD. Friends, families, and the loyal MSU community witnessed a delightful Shamrock 5k race without snow! It truly was a lucky day for a 5k.
